Chris Keup

Chris Keup is a platinum-selling songwriter and producer whose projects have reached as high as #2 overall on the Billboard charts. His debut solo album earned ASCAP’s Sammy Cahn lyricist award in a Lincoln Center ceremony (John Mayer, Lori McKenna and Josh Ritter won the prize on either side of Keup) and prompted showcases of his work at the Sundance Film Festival and SXSW. A planned follow-up, which was to have been produced by Sparklehorse’s Mark Linkous, never materialized following Linkous’ tragic death. Instead Keup increasingly worked behind the scenes, collaborating across genres on more than 200 albums while shifting the focus of his personal work to his nearly 13-years-in-the-making entry into the world of musical theater, Anna K. The Washington Post has said of his work, “(Keup writes)…intriguing vignettes, full of restless characters, yearning emotions, evocative imagery, and unresolved tensions.” The iconic producer Steve Lillywhite (Rolling Stones, Peter Gabriel, The Killers, XTC) says of Keup, “(He is) making highly innovative music. The quality of this Robbie Robertson / Blue Nile / Twin Peaks style artist is beyond discussion.” In writing Anna K., Keup is honoring the musical traditions of the Golden Age of Broadway while retelling this classic novel in a way reimagined for today that explores racial and power dynamics in modern New York
